Electrical Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Electrical Maintenance:- Electrical Maintenance means keeping electrical systems, machines, and equipment in safe, reliable, and efficient working condition by regular inspection, testing, cleaning, and repair

  • Objectives of Electrical Maintenance
    • Prevent electrical failures
    • Ensure safety of people & equipment
    • Reduce downtime and repair cost
    • Increase equipment life
    • Maintain power quality and efficiency
  • Types of Electrical Maintenance
    • Preventive Maintenance:- Preventive Maintenance is planned maintenance done before a fault occurs to avoid breakdowns and increase equipment life.
      • Includes: inspection, cleaning, lubrication, tightening, and part replacement.
      • Benefits: less downtime, improved safety, longer machine life, lower maintenance cost.
      • Example: regular lubrication of motor bearings to prevent failure.
    • Predictive Maintenance:- Predictive Maintenance is a maintenance method in which the actual condition of equipment is monitored using data, sensors, and analysis to predict when a failure is likely to occur, so maintenance is done only when needed and before breakdown happens.
    • Breakdown (Corrective) Maintenance:- Breakdown (Corrective) Maintenance is a maintenance method in which repair is done only after equipment fails or stops working. It is unplanned, causes sudden downtime, and is generally used for non-critical equipment.

Electrical Troubleshooting:- Electrical Troubleshooting is the systematic process of identifying, locating, and correcting electrical faults

  • Common Electrical Faults
    • No power supply
    • Short circuit
    • Open circuit
    • Overload
    • Earth fault
    • Loose connections
    • Insulation failure
  • Troubleshooting Steps (Golden Rule)
    • Understand the problem
    • Check power supply
    • Visual inspection (burn marks, loose wires)
    • Test with instruments (Multimeter, Megger, Clamp meter)
    • Identify faulty component
    • Repair or replace
    • Test system after repair
