Ethical use of AI tools

Video Module 6: AI, ETHICS & RESPONSIBLE USE

Ethical use of AI tools

As AI tools become part of daily learning, work, and decision-making, using them responsibly is no longer optional — it’s essential. Ethical AI use means applying technology in a way that is fair, transparent, safe, and human-centered.

What Is Ethical Use of AI?

  • Ethical AI use means:
    • Using AI to support human judgment, not replace responsibility
    • Ensuring fairness and non-bias
    • Protecting privacy and data
    • Being honest about AI-generated content
    • Avoiding harm, misuse, and manipulation

Core Principles of Responsible AI Use

  1. Transparency:- Always be clear when AI is used.
    • Good practice:
      1. Mention when content is AI-assisted
      2. Label AI-generated images, text, or reports
      3. Inform students or clients when AI tools are involved
  2. Human Oversight:- AI should assist not decide alone.
    • Good practice:
      1. Humans review AI outputs
      2. Final decisions remain with people
      3. No blind copy–paste from AI systems
      • Rule: AI suggests — Humans decide.
  3. Accuracy & Verification:- AI can be wrong or outdated.
    • Good practice:
      1. Fact-check important information
      2. Cross-verify with trusted sources
      3. Never use AI output directly for legal, medical, or policy decisions without expert review
  4. Privacy & Data Protection:- Never expose sensitive data to AI tools carelessly.
    • Do NOT upload:
      1. Personal identity details
      2. Student records
      3. Financial data
      4. Confidential documents
      5. Proprietary research
      • Use anonymized or sample data whenever possible.
  5. Fairness & Bias Awareness:- AI models may reflect hidden bias.
    • Good practice:
      1. Question unfair or one-sided outputs
      2. Avoid using AI for discriminatory screening
      3. Use diverse examples and datasets in training contexts
  6. Academic & Learning Integrity:- AI should support learning — not replace effort.
    • For students:
      1. Use AI for understanding concepts
      2. Not for submitting fully AI-written assignments as your own
      3. Show your thinking and process
    • For educators:
      1. Design AI-aware assignments
      2. Ask for reasoning, drafts, and reflections
  7. No Harmful Use:- AI must not be used for:
    1. Misinformation
    2. Deepfake deception
    3. Plagiarism
    4. Fraud
    5. Harassment
    6. Manipulation

If use causes harm — it is unethical, even if technically possible
