Table Setting

Table setting refers to the correct and neat arrangement of all essential items on the dining table before serving food to guests. The purpose of a proper table setting is to provide comfort, convenience, and a pleasant dining experience.

A basic table setting includes:

  • The plate placed in the center
  • Fork placed on the left side
  • Knife and spoon placed on the right side
  • Water glass placed above the knife on the right
  • A neatly folded napkin placed on or beside the plate

The table should look clean, balanced, and organized so that guests feel welcomed and comfortable while dining.

Service Skills

Service skills are the practical and behavioral abilities required by F&B staff to serve guests professionally and efficiently.

Important service skills include:

  • Serving food and beverages correctly (following left–right serving rules)
  • Setting and clearing the table properly
  • Taking and recording orders accurately
  • Handling plates, glassware, and cutlery safely
  • Carrying trays in a balanced and steady manner
  • Serving water, food, and drinks in the correct order
  • Paying attention to guests’ needs (refilling, assisting, checking satisfaction)
  • Maintaining polite communication and good body language
  • Managing time well and working efficiently during busy hours
  • Working as a team with other staff and the kitchen

Good service skills help create a smooth, professional, and enjoyable dining experience for every guest.
