Module 1: Introduction to Retail
Retail Formats

Retail formats describe the different types of stores retailers use to sell products. Each format has its own size, product range, pricing strategy, and service level. Choosing the right format helps retailers attract the right customers and operate efficiently.
- Department Store:-A departmentstore is a large retail shop divided into multiple sections (departments), where each department sells a different category of products such as clothing, cosmetics, electronics, home goods, toys, and more. All these departments operate under one roof, offering customers a wide variety of products, convenience, and a better shopping experience.
- Supermarket:- A supermarket is a large self-service retail store that mainly sells food items, groceries, daily-use products, and household essentials. Products are arranged in organized aisles, allowing customers to pick items themselves and pay at the checkout counter. Supermarkets offer convenience, variety, and affordable prices for everyday needs.
- Convenience Store:- A convenience store is a small retail shop located in easily accessible places that sells everyday essential items like snacks, drinks, toiletries, and basic groceries. It stays open for long hours (often late night) and offers quick, easy, and convenient shopping for customers who need items in a hurry.
- Specialty Store:-A specialtystore is a retail shop that focuses on one specific product category such as shoes, mobile phones, cosmetics, sports gear, or books. These stores offer deep product variety, expert knowledge, and better service in their chosen category, making them ideal for customers looking for specialized products.
- Hypermarket:- A hypermarket is a very large retail store that combines a supermarket + department store under one roof. It sells groceries, clothing, electronics, home goods, appliances, and many other products at discounted prices. Hypermarkets offer wide variety, bulk buying options, and one-stop shopping convenience.
- Discount Store:- A discount store is a retail shop that sells products at lower prices than regular stores. It offers a wide range of items—such as clothing, household goods, groceries, electronics by keeping low margins, simple store designs, and bulk purchasing. These stores attract customers mainly because of budget-friendly prices.
- E-Retail / Online Retail:- E-Retail, or Online Retail, refers to buying and selling products through the internet using websites or mobile apps. Customers can browse items, compare prices, place orders, and make payments online, and the products are delivered to their home. It offers convenience, wide variety, 24/7 shopping, and easy return options.
Store Layouts
Store layouts determine how products, aisles, and displays are arranged inside a store. Good layouts improve customer movement, product visibility, and sales.
- Grid Layout:- Straight rows of shelves forming a grid. Helps customers shop quickly and allows maximum product display. Commonly used in supermarkets and medical stores.
- Free-Flow Layout:- Open and flexible layout with no fixed pathways. Encourages browsing and gives a premium, relaxed shopping experience. Mostly used in fashion and boutique stores.
- Racetrack / Loop Layout:- A circular or looped pathway that guides customers through all major areas of the store. Increases product exposure and impulse buying. Used by large department stores.
- Boutique / Angled Layout:- Uses angled shelves and creative displays to highlight products. Suitable for luxury and designer stores where ambiance matters.
