Engineering Materials & Metallurgy is a core subject in Diploma and Mechanical Engineering that deals with the study of materials, their properties, structure, processing, and applications in engineering. It helps engineers select the right material for the right job to ensure safety, durability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

1. Engineering Materials:- Engineering materials are the materials used to make machines, tools, buildings, and products. Examples: iron, steel, aluminium, plastic, rubber.

     • Metals
       1. Ferrous metals (contain iron): iron, steel, cast iron
       2. Non-ferrous metals (no iron): aluminium, copper, brass
     • Non-metals
       1. Plastic
       2. Rubber
       3. Glass
       4. Wood
     • Composites
       1. Two or more materials mixed together
       2. Example: fiberglass, reinforced concrete
2. Metallurgy:- Metallurgy is the science and technology of extracting metals from ores, refining them, and improving their properties.

     • Extractive Metallurgy – Extraction of metals from ores
     • Physical Metallurgy – Structure and properties of metals
     • Mechanical Metallurgy – Behavior of metals under force
